Puebla city sits at 2,160 meters in the shadow of the Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes, giving it a temperate climate with cool nights and warm days averaging 17°C annually. The volcanic peaks create stunning backdrops but also pose ash-fall risks during active eruption phases of Popocatepetl.

The state spans from the arid Tehuacan Valley, one of the driest areas in central Mexico with less than 400mm of annual rainfall, to the lush Sierra Norte where cloud forests receive over 2,500mm. This extraordinary climate diversity exists within a state that can be crossed in just a few hours by car.

Summer thunderstorms bring the majority of Puebla city's 900mm of annual rainfall between May and October, occasionally accompanied by hail that can damage crops and vehicles. The northern Sierra region is frequently affected by "nortes" in winter, cold fronts that bring prolonged overcast skies, drizzle, and temperatures near freezing at higher elevations.
