Hungary has a continental climate characterized by hot summers and cold winters, with the Great Hungarian Plain amplifying temperature extremes. Budapest regularly sees summer highs above 30°C and winter lows that can dip to -10°C or colder.

Thunderstorms are a defining feature of Hungarian summers, often producing large hail and strong winds across the flat plains from May through August.

Lake Balaton, Central Europe's largest lake, creates a localized microclimate in western Hungary. The northeastern highlands receive heavier snowfall and cooler summer temperatures compared to the southern plains.
