Austria's position in the heart of Europe and its Alpine terrain create a climate that blends continental and mountain influences. The eastern lowlands around Vienna experience a Pannonian climate with warm summers, cold winters, and relatively low precipitation, while the western Alpine regions receive heavy snowfall and rainfall, with some mountain valleys recording over 2,000mm annually. Temperature inversions in Alpine valleys can trap cold air, creating surprisingly frigid conditions.

Winter is Austria's defining season for tourism, with reliable snowfall in the Alps supporting a world-class ski industry. The northern Alps receive the heaviest snowfall from northwest weather systems, while the southern ranges are sunnier but can receive intense Mediterranean precipitation. Summer brings warm conditions to the lowlands and valleys, with afternoon thunderstorms common over the mountains from June through August.

Vienna experiences a continental climate with hot summers averaging 26°C and cold winters around 1°C, with the Danube Valley channeling easterly winds. Salzburg is wetter and cooler due to its proximity to the Alps, while Innsbruck in the Inn Valley has a unique microclimate sheltered by surrounding mountains but subject to föhn winds. The Wachau wine region along the Danube benefits from a particularly warm and sunny microclimate.
