Switzerland's Alpine geography creates extraordinary weather diversity within its compact borders. The country's climate varies dramatically with altitude, from the mild lakeside conditions of Lugano in the Italian-speaking south to the Arctic-like conditions at the summit of the Jungfraujoch at 3,454 meters. The Alps act as a major European weather divide, separating the wetter, cooler north from the warmer, sunnier south.

The föhn wind is Switzerland's most dramatic weather phenomenon — a warm, dry wind that develops when moist air is forced over the Alps and descends on the lee side. Föhn events can raise temperatures by 15-20°C in hours, cause rapid snowmelt, and historically have been linked to devastating fires in Alpine villages. Heavy precipitation events on the windward side of the Alps can bring extreme snowfall in winter and flooding in summer.

Zurich has a temperate climate with cold, often foggy winters and warm summers with thunderstorms. Geneva benefits from Lake Geneva's moderating influence and has slightly milder conditions. Zermatt and other high-altitude resorts experience severe winter conditions with heavy snow, while Lugano and the Ticino region south of the Alps enjoy a Mediterranean-influenced climate with warm summers, mild winters, and significantly more sunshine than northern Switzerland.
