France benefits from three distinct climate zones that give it remarkable weather diversity for a European country. The Atlantic coast from Brittany to the Basque Country has a mild, oceanic climate with frequent rainfall and moderate temperatures year-round. The Mediterranean south enjoys hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters with over 2,700 hours of annual sunshine. The interior and eastern regions have a continental climate with more pronounced seasonal extremes.

The mistral wind is one of France's most distinctive weather features — a cold, powerful northwesterly that funnels down the Rhône Valley and can bring sudden temperature drops of 10-15°C to Provence and the Côte d'Azur. Summer heat waves are an increasing concern, with temperatures exceeding 40°C becoming more frequent in southern and central France. The Alps and Pyrenees receive heavy winter snowfall, supporting extensive ski industries.

Paris has a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters averaging 4°C and warm summers around 20°C, though heat waves can push temperatures significantly higher. Nice and Marseille on the Mediterranean coast enjoy hot summers and mild winters with abundant sunshine. Strasbourg in the east has colder winters with occasional snow, while Bordeaux benefits from the Gulf Stream's moderating influence and a climate ideal for its famous vineyards.
