North Macedonia climate

North Macedonia has a transitional climate between Mediterranean and continental. Skopje, in a mountain basin, experiences hot summers frequently surpassing 35°C and cold winters dropping to -10°C or lower.

The country's mountainous terrain creates diverse microclimates. Lake Ohrid in the southwest moderates local temperatures and creates milder weather compared to the surrounding highlands.

Spring arrives early in the southern lowlands but can be delayed by weeks in the mountain regions. Summer thunderstorms are common in the afternoons, particularly in the western mountains.
