Bulgaria climate

Bulgaria's climate is divided by the Balkan Mountains into a continental zone in the north and a Mediterranean-influenced zone in the south. Sofia, sitting at 550 meters elevation, experiences colder winters and cooler summers than the Thracian Plain to the south.

The country receives most of its precipitation in late spring and early summer. Winters in northern Bulgaria can be severe, with cold winds sweeping down from the Danube Plain.

The Black Sea coast from Varna to Burgas benefits from a moderate maritime climate. The Rhodope and Pirin mountain ranges receive substantial snowfall from December through April.
