Yucatan Weather Forecast

Live weather data for Yucatan powered by Weather Scope

Yucatan has a hot, humid tropical climate with average temperatures of 26-28°C throughout the year. Merida, the state capital, is one of the hottest cities in Mexico with summer heat indices regularly exceeding 45°C when humidity is factored in, earning it the local nickname "the white city" partly for residents' preference for light-colored clothing.

The rainy season from May through October brings 900-1,100mm of annual precipitation, primarily as intense afternoon thunderstorms that form over the flat limestone peninsula. The Yucatan's unique karst geology means there are no rivers on the surface — all water drains through the porous limestone into cenotes and underground rivers.

Hurricane season is the dominant weather concern, as the northern Yucatan Peninsula has been struck by numerous powerful storms including Hurricane Gilbert in 1988 and Hurricane Isidore in 2002. Winter "nortes" occasionally bring brief cool spells with temperatures dropping to 15-18°C, which locals consider quite cold. The flat terrain and lack of orographic features mean that weather patterns tend to be uniform across the state.
