Quintana Roo has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, averaging 26-28°C across the Caribbean coastline that includes the major resort cities of Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum. Humidity is consistently high, and sea breezes provide the primary relief from the tropical heat.
The state is one of the most hurricane-vulnerable in Mexico, sitting squarely in the path of Atlantic and Caribbean tropical cyclones. Category 5 Hurricane Wilma in 2005 and Hurricane Dean in 2007 caused billions in damage to the hotel zone and coastal infrastructure. The hurricane season from June through November dominates weather planning for the tourism industry.
The rainy season peaks from September through November with annual totals of 1,000-1,500mm. The Caribbean coast experiences sargassum seaweed influxes influenced by ocean currents and wind patterns, particularly from April through August. Winter brings occasional cold fronts that briefly lower temperatures and create choppy seas, but prolonged cold spells are extremely rare.
