Queretaro enjoys a semi-arid to temperate climate at 1,820 meters elevation, with the capital city averaging 18°C annually and experiencing warm, sunny days throughout most of the year. The dry season from November to April features clear blue skies and comfortable temperatures ideal for the city's booming aerospace and manufacturing industries.
The rainy season from May through September brings 550-600mm of precipitation, mostly as afternoon thunderstorms that can produce impressive lightning displays over the highland plateau. The Sierra Gorda in the northeastern part of the state receives considerably more rainfall and hosts diverse ecosystems from semi-desert to cloud forest.
Winter mornings can be crisp with temperatures occasionally dropping below 5°C, though hard freezes are uncommon in the city proper. The semi-arid Queretaro Valley can experience sudden temperature drops of 15°C or more when winter cold fronts arrive, and dust devils are a common sight across the open agricultural plains during the hot, dry spring months.
