Durango Weather Forecast
Live weather data for Durango powered by Weather Scope
Durango straddles the Sierra Madre Occidental, creating stark climate differences between the temperate highlands and the arid Bolson de Mapimi desert in the northeast. The capital city at 1,880 meters elevation has a pleasant semi-arid climate averaging 18°C with cool winters and warm, wet summers.
The mountainous western portion of the state receives heavy summer rains of 800-1,200mm and occasional winter snowfall at higher elevations, supporting dense pine-oak forests. The eastern desert receives less than 300mm of rain annually and experiences extreme temperature swings.
The Espinazo del Diablo highway through the Sierra Madre is notorious for dangerous fog, ice, and landslides during the rainy season. Durango's highland plateau is one of the areas in Mexico most affected by severe hailstorms and lightning during the summer monsoon, and winter freezes can damage agriculture across the valley.
