Kentucky has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons and moderate precipitation throughout the year. The state receives approximately 45 to 50 inches of rainfall annually, supporting its famous bluegrass pastures and horse farming industry. Temperatures are moderated by the surrounding hills and river valleys, though extremes from both Arctic air and Gulf moisture are common.

Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes affect Kentucky primarily from March through June, with the western part of the state being most vulnerable. The December 2021 tornado outbreak devastated communities in western Kentucky, with a single tornado tracking over 160 miles. Flooding is also a persistent hazard, particularly in the eastern mountain regions where steep terrain channels heavy rain into narrow valleys.

Winters in Kentucky are variable, with occasional snow and ice storms interspersed with mild periods. The eastern mountains receive the most snowfall, averaging 20 to 30 inches per season, while the western lowlands see considerably less. Summer heat and humidity can be oppressive, with heat indices regularly exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit in July and August.
