Nova Scotia's weather is heavily influenced by its peninsula geography, surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean on three sides and bordered by the Bay of Fundy. Halifax rarely sees the extreme cold that grips interior Canada.

The province sits directly in the path of major storm tracks, including nor'easters and the remnants of Atlantic hurricanes. Post-tropical storms like Hurricane Fiona in 2022 can bring destructive winds, storm surge, and heavy rainfall. The Bay of Fundy's extreme tidal range—the highest in the world—amplifies storm surge risks along the northern coast.

Nova Scotia receives abundant precipitation year-round, averaging over 1,400 mm annually in Halifax. Winters bring a mix of rain, freezing rain, and snow, with coastal areas often experiencing messy mixed-precipitation events as temperatures hover near the freezing mark. The province is also one of Canada's foggiest regions, with the south shore experiencing over 100 fog days per year.
