Bosnia and Herzegovina's climate is shaped by the Dinaric Alps, dividing Mediterranean-influenced southern areas from the continental interior. Sarajevo has cold, snowy winters with temperatures often dropping to -10°C and warm summers averaging around 27°C.

The country receives substantial precipitation, particularly in the western highlands where annual totals can exceed 2,000mm. Snowfall in Sarajevo is heavy and reliable.

The small strip of coastline near Neum on the Adriatic enjoys a true Mediterranean climate. Spring flooding is a recurring hazard as mountain snowmelt combines with heavy rain in river valleys.
