Arizona flood danger lingers near Phoenix; 1,035 remain in Malaysia shelters
Flood warnings stayed up in Arizona and New Mexico after heavy rain near Phoenix, while 1,035 people were still in shelters across four Malaysian states Wednesday night.
Past 24 Hours
In central Arizona, floodwater was still moving down the Salt River flood warning area Wednesday after Maricopa County said a three-day storm from Oct. 30 through Nov. 1 dropped 1 to 4 inches of rain across the lower desert, including metro Phoenix, and up to 8 inches in foothills and higher ground. County officials declared a local emergency Monday for unincorporated areas after search and rescue calls, road closures and other storm response work.
Elsewhere in the Southwest, flood warnings remained in place early Wednesday for Vamori Wash near Santa Cruz and Kupk in Pima County, for Moenkopi Wash near Tuba City, and for the San Juan River at Shiprock, New Mexico.
Flooding in Malaysia had 1,035 people in shelters across four states as of 8:30 p.m. local time Wednesday, including 980 people in Selangor, according to the InfoBencanaJKM social welfare department. Water levels were above warning or danger stage Wednesday night in parts of Selangor and Kuala Lumpur, with Public InfoBanjir reporting Pintu Air Ijok at danger level and Saujana Aman above warning level.
The Storm Prediction Center logged four preliminary wind damage reports in the 24-hour period ending at 8 a.m. EST. They included a damaged barn near Renick, Missouri, and trees down near Magnolia, Arkansas, and Doyline, Louisiana.
What's Happening Now
The National Weather Service had 39 active flood warnings early Wednesday, more than any other land alert category. In Florida, river flooding continued along the St. Johns River, where the Astor flood warning said moderate flooding was under way and canals had overflowed into yards, leaving homes on or near Wildhog and Bonnet roads inaccessible with several inches of water inside some homes.
Outlook Through Tonight
The risk of new severe weather through tonight was relatively low, but not zero. The Storm Prediction Center's day 1 outlook put parts of northeast Alabama, northwest Georgia and the southern Appalachians in a marginal risk area. Forecasters said isolated severe wind gusts and a brief tornado were possible from morning into early evening.
Flash flood concerns were more scattered. The Weather Prediction Center's day 1 excessive rainfall outlook runs through 7 a.m. EST Thursday.
Guam and the rest of the Mariana Islands had no additional watches or warning bulletins posted Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service office in Tiyan.
