Rhode Island Weather Forecast
Live weather data for Rhode Island powered by Weather Scope
Rhode Island, the smallest U.S. state by area, has a humid continental climate with warm, humid summers and cold winters tempered by its extensive coastline. Narragansett Bay penetrates deep into the state and significantly moderates temperatures, keeping the coast milder in winter and cooler in summer than inland areas. Providence receives about 49 inches of precipitation annually, distributed fairly evenly throughout the year.
Despite its small size, Rhode Island is vulnerable to significant weather events, particularly nor'easters and hurricanes that track up the Atlantic coast. The Great New England Hurricane of 1938 devastated the state with a storm surge of up to 20 feet in some areas. Hurricane Carol in 1954 and Hurricane Bob in 1991 also caused major damage, underscoring the state's coastal vulnerability.
Snowfall in Rhode Island averages about 33 inches per season, though individual storms can be much more impressive. The Blizzard of 1978 dropped over 28 inches on the state in a single event, paralyzing transportation for days. Summer weather is generally pleasant, with average highs in the low 80s and sea breezes providing relief along the coast. Block Island, offshore, has a distinctly maritime climate with fog, mild temperatures, and persistent winds.
