Mexico City sits in the Valley of Mexico at 2,240 meters elevation, giving the capital a subtropical highland climate with mild temperatures year-round averaging 16-17°C. The high altitude means warm, sunny days and cool nights, with temperatures rarely exceeding 30°C or dropping below 5°C.

The rainy season from May through October brings daily afternoon thunderstorms that can cause significant urban flooding in low-lying areas of the former lakebed. Annual rainfall averages 800-1,000mm, with the southern boroughs receiving more precipitation than the drier northern areas due to orographic effects from surrounding mountains.

Air quality is a major weather concern in Mexico City, as temperature inversions trap pollutants in the valley, particularly during the dry winter months. The city occasionally experiences hailstorms and even rare frost events in the higher southern areas like Tlalpan and Milpa Alta during December and January.
