Yukon Weather Forecast

The Yukon's climate is shaped by its mountainous terrain and northern latitude, producing some of Canada's most extreme cold. Snag, Yukon holds the record for the coldest temperature ever recorded in North America at -63°C in February 1947. Whitehorse, sheltered in a valley, has a drier subarctic climate with cold winters averaging -15°C in January and warm summers reaching 20°C.

Despite its reputation for cold, the Yukon is one of the driest regions in Canada. Whitehorse receives only about 260 mm of precipitation annually—less than many desert cities. The Coast Mountains block most Pacific moisture, creating a rain shadow across much of the territory. When storms do penetrate, they can bring significant snowfall to the mountain passes and higher elevations.

The Yukon experiences dramatic seasonal daylight shifts, with the summer solstice bringing over 19 hours of daylight to Whitehorse and nearly 24 hours above the Arctic Circle. This extended daylight produces a compressed but intense growing season. Winter brings the northern lights as a spectacular compensation for the long, dark nights. The territory's glaciers and icefields are significant but retreating rapidly due to warming temperatures.
