Tonga has a tropical maritime climate with average temperatures ranging from 23°C in the cooler months to 27°C in the warmest. The wet season from November to April brings heavy rainfall, high humidity, and the risk of tropical cyclones.

The kingdom's 170 islands are spread across 700 kilometers of ocean, creating notable weather variations. The 2022 Hunga Tonga eruption dramatically demonstrated the interplay between geology and weather in the region.

Tropical cyclones are a significant hazard, with an average of one to two cyclones affecting Tonga each season. The El Niño-Southern Oscillation strongly influences Tonga's rainfall patterns.
