Guanajuato sits on the central Mexican plateau with a temperate semi-arid climate characterized by warm days and cool nights throughout the year. The capital city, nestled in a valley at 2,000 meters, averages 18°C annually with dry, sunny winters and mild, rainy summers.

The rainy season from June to September brings 600-700mm of precipitation, primarily as afternoon and evening thunderstorms that can cause flash flooding in the narrow colonial streets of Guanajuato city. The Bajio lowlands around Leon and Irapuato tend to be slightly warmer and drier than the highland areas.

Winter nights in the highlands can be surprisingly cold, occasionally dropping below 0°C with frost events that affect the state's important agricultural sector. Spring is the warmest and driest period, with temperatures in Leon and Celaya reaching 34-36°C before the monsoon rains provide relief in June.
