Chiapas is one of Mexico's most climatically diverse states, with conditions ranging from hot and humid lowlands along the Pacific coast and Gulf plains to cool, misty highlands above 2,000 meters. Tuxtla Gutierrez in the Central Depression averages 25°C with summer highs above 38°C.

Rainfall varies dramatically by region, from 1,000mm in the Central Depression to over 4,000mm in the Sierra Madre mountains and the Lacandon Jungle. The Soconusco coast receives intense seasonal downpours that make it one of the wettest areas in Mexico.

The highland city of San Cristobal de las Casas sits at 2,200 meters and experiences cool temperatures year-round with frequent fog and light rain. Chiapas is highly vulnerable to the effects of tropical cyclones from both the Pacific and Atlantic basins, which can trigger devastating floods and landslides in mountainous terrain.
