Chile's extraordinary 4,300-kilometer length from north to south makes it one of the most climatically diverse countries on Earth. The Atacama Desert in the north is the driest place on the planet, with some weather stations having never recorded a single drop of rain. This hyper-arid region receives less than 1mm of precipitation per year, yet supports unique fog-dependent ecosystems called lomas where moisture from Pacific coastal fog sustains plant life.

Central Chile around Santiago enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers (November-March) and cool, wet winters (May-August). This region produces world-class wines thanks to reliable sunshine, cool Pacific influences, and adequate winter rainfall. The Lake District further south transitions to a temperate rainforest climate with heavy year-round precipitation, lush vegetation, and snow-capped volcanoes.

Southern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego experience fierce westerly winds, cold temperatures, and frequent rain and snow. The channels and fjords of the far south receive some of the heaviest precipitation in the Southern Hemisphere. Santiago experiences four pleasant seasons with occasional smog during winter inversions, while Valparaíso on the coast benefits from moderate maritime temperatures and refreshing sea breezes year-round.
