Quebec spans a massive geographic area from the St. Lawrence Valley to the Arctic tundra, producing enormous climate diversity within a single province. The populated southern regions experience a humid continental climate with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Northern Quebec endures subarctic and arctic conditions with permafrost and extreme cold.

Winter dominates Quebec's weather calendar, with Montreal averaging over 200 cm of snowfall annually and temperatures regularly dropping below -20°C in January. The St. Lawrence River Valley acts as a corridor for Arctic air masses, and ice storms—like the devastating 1998 event—remain a serious hazard during the transition months.

Quebec's summers bring warm, humid conditions to the southern lowlands, with temperatures often reaching 30°C or higher in Montreal and Quebec City. The province is also affected by the remnants of Atlantic hurricanes and tropical storms in the fall, which can bring heavy rainfall and strong winds to the St. Lawrence region.
