Afghanistan Weather Radar

Live radar for Afghanistan powered by Weather Scope

Afghanistan has an arid to semi-arid continental climate shaped by its rugged mountainous terrain and landlocked position. The Hindu Kush range bisects the country from northeast to southwest, creating a dramatic climatic divide between the cold, relatively moist northern slopes and the hot, arid southern plains stretching toward the deserts of Helmand and Registan.

Kabul at 1,800 meters elevation has distinct seasons with warm, dry summers reaching 35°C and cold winters where temperatures drop to -15°C with regular snowfall. Most precipitation falls between December and April from westerly weather systems originating over the Mediterranean and Caspian Seas, while the summer months are almost completely dry across most of the country.

The southwestern deserts of Nimruz and Helmand provinces are among the hottest places in Asia, with summer temperatures exceeding 49°C and annual rainfall below 50 mm. In stark contrast, the Wakhan Corridor in the extreme northeast experiences subarctic conditions at high elevations, with glaciers and permafrost. The notorious "Wind of 120 Days" blows across western Afghanistan from June to September, creating persistent dust storms that can reduce visibility to near zero.
