Maryland climate

Maryland's compact size belies its climatic diversity, spanning from the Atlantic coast to the Appalachian Mountains. The Chesapeake Bay, which bisects the state, significantly influences local weather by moderating temperatures and increasing humidity. The eastern shore and coastal plain have a humid subtropical climate, while the mountainous western region is decidedly continental.

The state is affected by a variety of weather hazards including nor'easters, severe thunderstorms, occasional tropical systems, and winter ice storms. The Baltimore-Washington corridor is particularly vulnerable to heavy snowfall from coastal storms, with the February 2010 storms dropping over 40 inches in parts of the state. Flooding along the numerous rivers and streams that drain into the Chesapeake Bay is a recurring concern.

Summers in Maryland are hot and humid, with the Baltimore area averaging highs near 90 degrees Fahrenheit and oppressive humidity. Winter conditions vary dramatically across the state; Ocean City may see rain while Garrett County in the mountains receives heavy snow. The western mountains average over 100 inches of snowfall per season, supporting ski resorts, while the eastern shore rarely exceeds 15 inches.
