The United Kingdom's weather is famously changeable, driven by its position at the meeting point of polar and tropical air masses in the North Atlantic. The Gulf Stream keeps temperatures milder than other regions at similar latitudes, but the constant battle between competing weather systems means forecasts can change rapidly. Maritime influences ensure that extremes are rare, but grey skies and drizzle are common companions.

Western Scotland and Wales receive the heaviest rainfall, with some locations exceeding 3,000mm annually as Atlantic weather fronts are forced upward over the mountains. Eastern England is drier, with parts of Essex and Kent receiving less than 600mm per year — comparable to Barcelona. Winter brings the risk of snow, particularly in Scotland and northern England, while summer temperatures average around 20-25°C in the south but can occasionally spike above 35°C during heat waves.

London enjoys relatively mild winters and warm summers by UK standards, though fog is less common than its historical reputation suggests. Edinburgh and Glasgow experience cooler temperatures and more wind, while coastal areas of Cornwall and Devon benefit from the Gulf Stream's warming influence. Storm season from October through March brings powerful Atlantic low-pressure systems that can bring damaging winds, heavy rain, and coastal flooding.
