The northern third of the country is true Saharan desert, receiving virtually no rainfall, while Khartoum at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile receives around 150mm annually. Temperatures in Khartoum regularly exceed 45°C between April and June, making it one of the hottest capitals in the world.
