Oman's diverse geography creates distinct climate zones that set it apart from its Arabian Peninsula neighbors. The Al Hajar Mountains in the north rise above 3,000 meters and receive moderate rainfall, supporting terraced agriculture and cooler temperatures that contrast sharply with the coastal and desert lowlands. Muscat on the Gulf of Oman coast experiences extreme summer heat above 45°C combined with stifling humidity, making it one of the hottest capital cities in the world.

The Dhofar region in the south, centered on Salalah, is uniquely affected by the Indian Ocean monsoon (khareef) from June through September, which brings fog, drizzle, and cooler temperatures while the rest of the Arabian Peninsula bakes in summer heat. This monsoon transforms the normally brown Dhofar hills into lush green landscapes, attracting tourists from across the Gulf region. The central Rub' al Khali desert is among the most inhospitable environments on Earth, with virtually no rainfall and summer temperatures exceeding 50°C.

Tropical cyclones from the Arabian Sea pose a significant threat to Oman's coastline, particularly during the pre-monsoon (May-June) and post-monsoon (October-November) periods. Cyclone Gonu in 2007 was the strongest tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Arabian Sea and caused devastating flooding. The interior wadis are prone to deadly flash floods when rare rainfall events occur over the mountains. Nighttime temperatures in Muscat during summer can remain above 30°C, offering little respite from the daytime heat.
