Indonesia Weather Forecast

Live weather data for Indonesia powered by Weather Scope

Indonesia is the world's largest archipelago, straddling the equator across 5,100 kilometers with over 17,000 islands that create an extraordinarily complex tropical maritime climate. The country lies within the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool, where sea surface temperatures consistently exceed 28°C, fueling intense convection and some of the most prolific thunderstorm activity on the planet. Indonesia experiences an average of 200+ thunderstorm days per year in many areas.

The monsoon cycle drives two seasons: a wet season from October to March during the northwest monsoon, and a drier season from April to September during the southeast monsoon. However, equatorial regions like Kalimantan and Sulawesi receive significant rainfall year-round. Indonesia is also profoundly affected by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), with El Niño events bringing drought and devastating forest fires, and La Niña bringing excessive rainfall and flooding.

Jakarta has a tropical monsoon climate with heavy wet season rainfall from November to March and a drier period from June to September. Bali has a clear dry season ideal for tourism from April to October. The highlands of Java and Sumatra are cooler at elevation, while Papua in the east receives some of the highest rainfall in the country. Air quality during the dry season can deteriorate severely due to agricultural and forest fires, particularly in Sumatra and Kalimantan.
