Cyprus has an intense Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Nicosia is one of the hottest capitals in Europe, with summer highs frequently exceeding 38°C.

The Troodos Mountains rise to nearly 2,000 meters and receive enough snowfall for a small ski resort. These mountains force orographic rainfall, making the western slopes significantly wetter.

The island receives most of its annual rainfall between November and March, with virtually no rain from June through September. Coastal cities benefit from sea breezes that moderate summer temperatures.
