Ontario climate

Ontario's climate is as vast and varied as the province itself. Southern Ontario enjoys a humid continental climate moderated by the Great Lakes, producing warm, humid summers and cold winters. Northern Ontario experiences subarctic conditions with long, frigid winters and short, cool summers.

The Great Lakes play a significant role in Ontario's weather patterns, generating lake-effect snow that can dump heavy accumulations on downwind communities. Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are common across southern Ontario during the summer months, particularly along the corridor from Windsor to Ottawa.

Ontario experiences dramatic seasonal shifts, from blistering January cold snaps that can push wind chills below -30°C to July heat waves where humidex values exceed 40°C. The province also sits in the path of major storm systems tracking along the Great Lakes, making it one of Canada's most weather-active regions.
