Vietnam's elongated S-shape stretching over 1,600 kilometers from north to south creates dramatically different climate zones within a single country. The north around Hanoi has a subtropical climate with four distinct seasons, including genuinely cold winters when temperatures can drop to 5°C. Central Vietnam's narrow coastal strip is exposed to both southwest and northeast monsoons. The south around Ho Chi Minh City is tropical with consistent year-round warmth.

Typhoons are a major weather hazard, particularly for central Vietnam, which lies in the path of Western Pacific tropical cyclones. The typhoon season from August to November can bring devastating flooding to cities like Da Nang and Hue. The northeast monsoon from October to March brings cool, drizzly conditions to the north while delivering the heaviest rainfall to the central coast. The southwest monsoon from May to September brings rain to the south and highlands.

Hanoi has cool, damp winters around 17°C and hot, humid summers above 30°C with frequent thunderstorms. Ho Chi Minh City is consistently warm at 27-35°C with a clear wet season from May to November. Da Nang and the central coast have a different rhythm, with their wettest months from September to December. The highlands around Dalat at 1,500 meters enjoy a cool, spring-like climate year-round that made it a popular retreat during the colonial era.
