California encompasses an extraordinary range of climates, from the Mediterranean coast to alpine peaks, scorching deserts, and temperate rainforests. The state's Central Valley is one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world, benefiting from warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Death Valley holds the record for the highest reliably recorded air temperature on Earth at 134 degrees Fahrenheit.

The state's weather is strongly influenced by the Pacific Ocean and the complex topography of its mountain ranges. Atmospheric rivers, narrow corridors of concentrated moisture from the tropical Pacific, can deliver enormous amounts of rain and snow during winter months. These events are critical for California's water supply but can also trigger devastating floods, mudslides, and debris flows.

Wildfire season has become an increasingly dominant feature of California's climate, driven by prolonged droughts, hot Santa Ana and Diablo winds, and dry vegetation. The state experiences a pronounced dry season from May through October when virtually no rain falls in southern regions. Northern California receives significantly more precipitation, with some coastal areas seeing over 100 inches of rain annually.
