Syria Weather Radar

Live radar for Syria powered by Weather Scope

Syria's climate transitions from Mediterranean along the western coast to arid steppe and desert in the east, creating distinct weather zones across the country. The narrow coastal plain and western mountain slopes receive substantial rainfall of 800-1,000mm annually, supporting agriculture and forests, while the vast eastern steppe beyond the Euphrates River receives less than 200mm. Damascus, sheltered in an oasis at the foot of the Anti-Lebanon Mountains, has a semi-arid climate with hot, dry summers and cool, moderately wet winters.

The northeastern Jazira region, historically Syria's breadbasket, depends heavily on winter and spring rainfall for its rain-fed agriculture. Severe drought years, which have become more frequent, can be devastating for this agricultural region. Summer temperatures across the interior regularly exceed 40°C, with the eastern desert experiencing the most extreme heat. Winter cold fronts from the Mediterranean can bring snow to Damascus and the highland areas, occasionally blanketing the capital in a rare white covering.

Aleppo in the north has a semi-arid continental climate with colder winters than Damascus, including regular frost and occasional heavy snowfall. The Mediterranean coastal city of Latakia enjoys milder temperatures year-round with warm, humid summers and rainy winters. Dust storms from the Syrian Desert and Mesopotamian plains affect much of the country during the dry season, and the khamsin wind can raise temperatures by 10-15°C in a matter of hours, bringing hot, sand-laden air from the desert interior.
