Portugal enjoys one of the mildest and sunniest climates in Europe, benefiting from its Atlantic coastal position and southern latitude. The country experiences a Mediterranean climate in the south and central regions, transitioning to a more oceanic climate in the north. The Algarve region in the far south is one of Europe's premier sun destinations, averaging over 3,000 hours of sunshine per year with mild winters and warm, dry summers.

Northern Portugal around Porto is cooler and significantly wetter than the south, with the mountainous Minho and Trás-os-Montes regions receiving heavy winter rainfall. The Douro Valley, famous for port wine production, has a unique microclimate sheltered by surrounding mountains that creates hot, dry summers ideal for viticulture. The Azores and Madeira archipelagos in the Atlantic have subtropical oceanic climates with mild, humid conditions year-round.

Lisbon is one of Europe's sunniest capitals, with hot summers averaging 28°C and mild winters around 12°C. Porto in the north is cooler and rainier but still pleasant compared to northern Europe. The Algarve coast from Faro to Lagos has the warmest winters in continental Europe and attracts visitors year-round. Forest fire risk is a serious concern during the hot, dry summer months, when strong easterly winds from Spain can create dangerous conditions.
