Papua New Guinea has a tropical monsoon climate with consistently warm temperatures averaging 26-28°C throughout the year. The country experiences a wet season from December to March and a drier season from June to September. Rainfall is among the heaviest in the world, with highland regions receiving over 4,000mm annually.
The mountainous interior creates dramatic weather contrasts. Coastal lowlands are hot and humid, while the central highlands above 2,000 meters can see nighttime temperatures fall to 4-6°C. Afternoon thunderstorms are a near-daily occurrence in the highland valleys.
Tropical cyclones occasionally affect the southern coastal regions between November and April. El Niño events can bring severe drought conditions, particularly to the highlands.
