Nauru climate

Nauru, the world's smallest island nation at just 21 square kilometers, sits almost exactly on the equator with a hot tropical climate averaging 28-30°C year-round. The island receives an average of 2,000mm of rainfall annually.

The island's equatorial location means tropical cyclones virtually never affect Nauru directly. However, the El Niño-Southern Oscillation has an outsized impact, with La Niña phases bringing severe drought lasting months or even years.

Nauru has no rivers or streams, making it entirely dependent on rainfall collection and a small desalination plant for freshwater. Westerly wind bursts associated with the Madden-Julian Oscillation periodically bring heavy rainfall and rough seas.
