Namibia Weather Radar

Live radar for Namibia powered by Weather Scope

Namibia is one of the driest countries in sub-Saharan Africa, with the ancient Namib Desert along its Atlantic coast being one of the oldest and most arid deserts on Earth. The cold Benguela Current flowing northward along the coast creates persistent fog banks that roll inland, providing the primary moisture source for unique fog-dependent desert ecosystems. Rainfall increases from virtually zero at the coast to around 600mm in the northeast Caprivi Strip, with the summer rainy season running from October to April.

The Skeleton Coast in the north is notorious for its dense fog, treacherous seas, and barren landscape, while the central Namib around Sossusvlei features towering red sand dunes and extreme diurnal temperature swings exceeding 30°C. The interior plateau where Windhoek sits at 1,700 meters enjoys a semi-arid climate with reliable summer thunderstorms and cool, dry winters. The Caprivi Strip in the far northeast has a subtropical climate with the highest rainfall and lush vegetation, a striking contrast to the rest of the country.

Windhoek has a pleasant semi-arid highland climate with warm summer days around 30°C and cool winter nights that can drop to near freezing. The coastal city of Swakopmund is remarkably cool for its latitude, rarely exceeding 25°C due to the Benguela Current, with morning fog common throughout the year. The far south around the Fish River Canyon can exceed 45°C in summer. Etosha National Park in the north experiences extreme heat before the rains, creating excellent wildlife viewing as animals congregate at waterholes.
