Mozambique Weather Radar
Live radar for Mozambique powered by Weather Scope
Mozambique stretches over 2,500 kilometers along the Indian Ocean coast of southeastern Africa, exposing it to tropical cyclones and making it one of the continent's most weather-vulnerable nations. The country has a tropical to subtropical climate with a wet season from October to March and a dry season from April to September. The northern provinces are hotter and receive more rainfall than the drier southern regions, with annual totals ranging from 500mm in the south to over 2,000mm in the central mountains.
Tropical cyclones from the Mozambique Channel pose a severe threat, with devastating impacts in recent years including Cyclone Idai in 2019 and Cyclone Freddy in 2023, both of which caused catastrophic flooding and loss of life. The Zambezi River delta and the flat coastal plains around Beira are particularly vulnerable to storm surge and river flooding. Interior highlands along the Zimbabwe border receive orographic rainfall and have cooler temperatures, providing a contrast to the sweltering lowlands.
Maputo in the far south has a subtropical climate with warm, wet summers averaging 27°C and mild, dry winters around 18°C. Beira in the central coast is hotter and more humid with significantly higher rainfall. The northern city of Nampula has a classic tropical wet-dry pattern with intense heat building before the monsoon breaks. Mozambique's extensive coastline, coral reefs, and warm Indian Ocean waters maintain sea temperatures between 24°C and 28°C year-round.
