Lesotho Weather Radar
Live radar for Lesotho powered by Weather Scope
Lesotho is unique in Africa as the only country entirely above 1,000 meters elevation, earning it the title "Kingdom in the Sky." This extreme altitude gives the small mountain nation a temperate continental climate unlike any of its neighbors, with genuine winter snowfall, sub-zero temperatures, and frost from May to September. The highest peaks in the Drakensberg range exceed 3,400 meters and receive heavy snowfall, supporting the only ski resort in southern Africa at Afriski.
Summer from October to April brings warm days and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, with the majority of Lesotho's 700-800mm annual rainfall concentrated in this period. Hailstorms are a significant agricultural hazard, and lightning strikes are common across the exposed highland terrain. The diurnal temperature range is extreme, with summer days reaching 30°C in the lowlands while nights in the highlands can still drop to near freezing even during the warmest months.
Maseru in the western lowlands has the mildest climate in the country, with summer highs around 28°C and winter lows near -3°C. The interior highlands experience significantly harsher conditions, with Mokhotlong in the northeast recording some of the coldest temperatures in southern Africa, occasionally dropping below -15°C. Snow can fall at any time from May to September in the mountains, and blizzards occasionally cut off remote villages. Spring in Lesotho is brief but spectacular, with wildflowers covering the mountain slopes.
