India's weather is dominated by the monsoon, one of the most powerful seasonal climate phenomena on Earth. The southwest monsoon arrives in June, sweeping moisture-laden air from the Indian Ocean across the subcontinent and delivering roughly 75% of India's annual rainfall between June and September. This single weather event determines agricultural success for hundreds of millions of people and drives the rhythm of life across the country.

The retreat of the monsoon from October through December brings the northeast monsoon, which delivers significant rainfall to southeastern India and Sri Lanka. The pre-monsoon season from March to May is the hottest period, with temperatures exceeding 45°C in parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and central India. Tropical cyclones in the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea pose serious threats during the pre- and post-monsoon transition periods.

Delhi has extreme seasonal variation, with scorching summers above 45°C, a humid monsoon season, pleasant winters around 14°C, and severe air quality issues during November-December. Mumbai has a tropical climate with a dramatically wet monsoon season receiving over 2,400mm of rain. Bangalore's elevation gives it a pleasant year-round climate. Cherrapunji in Meghalaya holds records for some of the highest rainfall ever recorded, while the Thar Desert in western Rajasthan receives less than 250mm annually.
