Sonora Weather Forecast
Live weather data for Sonora powered by Weather Scope
Sonora is Mexico's second-largest state and home to some of the most extreme heat in North America, with the Sonoran Desert regularly recording temperatures above 48°C in summer. Hermosillo, the capital, averages around 25°C annually but summer highs routinely exceed 42°C with intense solar radiation.
The North American Monsoon transforms the landscape from July through September, when surges of tropical moisture from the Gulf of California trigger violent afternoon thunderstorms. These storms can produce flash floods, dust storms known as haboobs, and dangerous lightning. Annual rainfall in the desert regions averages only 250-400mm, almost entirely falling during the monsoon.
The Gulf of California coast has a milder, more humid climate than the interior desert, with the port city of Guaymas and the resort town of Puerto Penasco benefiting from maritime influence. The northeastern mountain areas near the Chihuahua border experience cooler temperatures and occasional winter snow, providing a dramatic contrast to the desert floor below.
