Cuba enjoys a tropical climate moderated by the surrounding Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, with warm temperatures year-round averaging between 21°C and 32°C. The island experiences two distinct seasons: a dry season from November through April characterized by pleasant warmth and low humidity, and a wet season from May through October that brings afternoon thunderstorms, higher humidity, and the majority of the annual rainfall.
As the largest island in the Caribbean, Cuba sits directly in the path of Atlantic hurricanes, making the September-October period the peak of tropical cyclone risk. The island's elongated east-west shape means that weather conditions can vary significantly, with the mountainous Sierra Maestra in the east receiving substantially more rainfall than the flatter western provinces. Trade winds provide natural cooling, particularly along the northern coast.
Havana and other major cities experience warm, humid conditions for much of the year, with the dry season offering the most comfortable weather for visitors. The south coast tends to be drier and warmer than the north, while the central mountain areas are cooler and receive more precipitation. Cold fronts from North America occasionally reach Cuba during winter, briefly dropping temperatures and bringing unsettled weather.
