Comoros Weather Radar

Live radar for Comoros powered by Weather Scope

The Comoros archipelago lies in the warm waters of the Mozambique Channel between Madagascar and the African mainland, with a tropical marine climate characterized by two distinct seasons. The hot, humid rainy season runs from November to April, driven by the northwest monsoon, while the cooler, drier season from May to October is influenced by the southeast trade winds. Temperatures are warm year-round, typically ranging from 23°C to 32°C, with the surrounding ocean moderating extremes.

The volcanic terrain of the islands, particularly the active Karthala volcano on Grande Comore rising to 2,361 meters, creates significant orographic rainfall on the windward slopes. Annual rainfall varies from about 1,000mm on the drier coasts to over 5,000mm on the mountain peaks. Tropical cyclones occasionally affect the islands, bringing destructive winds and heavy rainfall, though direct hits are relatively uncommon compared to nearby Madagascar and the Mozambique coast.

Moroni on the western coast of Grande Comore has a tropical climate with hot, rainy summers averaging 28°C and mild, drier winters around 24°C. The island of Mayotte, a French territory geographically part of the archipelago, receives more consistent rainfall due to its lower elevation and broader land area. Moheli, the smallest island, is the wettest and most forested. The surrounding coral reefs benefit from warm, stable sea temperatures between 25°C and 29°C, supporting one of the world's most biodiverse marine environments.
