Wisconsin Weather Forecast
Live weather data for Wisconsin powered by Weather Scope
Wisconsin has a humid continental climate with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. The state's weather is influenced by Lake Michigan to the east and Lake Superior to the north, which moderate coastal temperatures and generate lake-effect precipitation. Madison receives approximately 34 inches of rain and 51 inches of snow per year, with the heaviest snowfall occurring in the northern part of the state.
Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes affect Wisconsin primarily from May through August, with the southern part of the state being most vulnerable. The Barneveld tornado of 1984 was a devastating EF5 event that destroyed the small town in southwestern Wisconsin. Blizzards and severe cold are the primary winter hazards, with Arctic outbreaks capable of producing wind chills below minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit, particularly in the northern forests.
Northern Wisconsin has a noticeably harsher climate than the south, with longer winters, heavier snowfall, and shorter growing seasons. The Apostle Islands on Lake Superior experience lake-effect snow and have a unique microclimate that supports ice caves in winter. Summers throughout the state are pleasant, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s drawing visitors to the numerous lakes and state parks. Fall brings vivid foliage displays, particularly in the northern hardwood forests.
