Alaska Weather Forecast

Live weather data for Alaska powered by Weather Scope

Alaska has the most diverse climate of any U.S. state, ranging from arctic conditions in the far north to maritime climates along the southeastern panhandle. Interior Alaska experiences extreme temperature swings, with summer highs near 90 degrees Fahrenheit and winter lows plunging below minus 50. The state's vast size means weather conditions can vary dramatically from one region to another.

The northern slope of Alaska lies above the Arctic Circle and experiences polar desert conditions with very little precipitation. Barrow, one of the northernmost communities, endures nearly 67 days of continuous darkness in winter and 82 days of midnight sun in summer. Permafrost underlies much of the northern and interior regions, profoundly influencing the landscape.

Southeast Alaska, including the capital Juneau, receives extraordinary amounts of rain and snow due to moist Pacific air masses colliding with coastal mountains. Annual precipitation in some areas exceeds 200 inches. Winters in the panhandle are relatively mild compared to the interior, with temperatures rarely dropping below zero thanks to the moderating influence of the Pacific Ocean.
