Sweden stretches from the temperate south to well above the Arctic Circle in the north, encompassing dramatic climate variations and extreme seasonal daylight changes. Northern Sweden (Norrland) experiences sub-Arctic conditions with long, dark winters where temperatures can drop below -30°C and snow cover persists for six months or more. In contrast, southern Sweden has a milder maritime climate influenced by the Baltic Sea and Atlantic Gulf Stream.
The midnight sun illuminates northern Sweden for weeks during summer solstice, while the polar night brings extended darkness in winter. Despite the high latitude, summer temperatures can be surprisingly warm, occasionally exceeding 30°C even in central Sweden. The Scandinavian Mountains along the Norwegian border force moist Atlantic air upward, creating heavy precipitation on the western slopes while eastern Sweden remains in a rain shadow.
Stockholm enjoys a maritime-influenced climate with cold but manageable winters averaging -3°C and pleasant summers around 18°C. Gothenburg on the west coast is milder and wetter. Malmö in the far south has the mildest winters in Sweden. Kiruna in Lapland is one of the coldest inhabited places in Scandinavia, famous for its ice hotel and Northern Lights displays during the long polar nights of winter.
