Eritrea Weather Forecast
Live weather data for Eritrea powered by Weather Scope
Eritrea's climate varies dramatically across its diverse topography, from the scorching Danakil Depression — one of the hottest places on Earth — to the pleasant highlands where the capital Asmara sits at 2,325 meters elevation. The country's position along the Red Sea coast and its range of altitudes create distinct climate zones within a relatively small area. The western lowlands have a semi-arid Sahel climate, while the eastern coastal strip experiences extreme heat and humidity influenced by the Red Sea.
The central highlands receive the most reliable rainfall during the main rainy season from June to September, when moisture-laden air from the Atlantic crosses the continent. The eastern escarpment and Danakil lowlands receive very little rain and are among the most inhospitable environments on Earth, with temperatures around Dallol regularly exceeding 40°C even in the cooler months. The western lowlands receive scattered summer rainfall that supports seasonal farming and pastoralism.
Asmara has one of the most pleasant climates of any African capital, with year-round temperatures averaging 16°C due to its highland elevation, earning it the nickname "City of Eternal Spring." The city receives most of its 520mm annual rainfall in July and August. Massawa on the Red Sea coast is brutally hot, with summer temperatures above 40°C and high humidity. The Danakil Depression near the Ethiopian border sees average annual temperatures above 34°C and is home to the Dallol hydrothermal area, which holds records for the highest average temperature of any inhabited place on Earth.
