Djibouti Weather Radar
Live radar for Djibouti powered by Weather Scope
Djibouti is one of the hottest and most arid countries on Earth, with a harsh desert climate that dominates the tiny Horn of Africa nation. Summer temperatures from June to August regularly exceed 42°C, with the searing Khamsin wind driving readings above 45°C in the interior lowlands around Lake Assal, which at 155 meters below sea level is the lowest point in Africa. Annual rainfall averages only 130mm, making water scarcity a defining challenge for the country.
The brief cool season from November to February offers some relief, with temperatures dropping to a more manageable 25-30°C and occasional rain showers. The rare but intense rainfall events can cause flash flooding in the wadis and dry riverbeds that crisscross the volcanic landscape. The Gulf of Tadjoura and the surrounding coastline are influenced by the Indian Ocean monsoon system, and maritime humidity combines with extreme heat to create oppressive conditions along the shore during summer.
Djibouti City on the coast has a hot desert climate with average annual temperatures around 30°C, making it one of the hottest capital cities in the world. The port area can feel slightly cooler due to sea breezes, but the humidity makes conditions feel more oppressive than the dry interior. Lake Assal, surrounded by salt flats and volcanic rock, records some of the highest temperatures in Africa. The Day Forest National Park in the Goda Mountains at 1,500 meters is the only area with a relatively mild climate, supporting a remnant patch of juniper forest.
